This three-day (24 hour) course is designed for individuals seeking certification as an Asbestos Inspector in order to perform building asbestos inspections and assessments.  This course will provide participants with a comprehensive review of suspect asbestos-containing materials in buildings and techniques to find, categorize, and assess their conditions and potential for disturbance.  This class includes lectures, demonstrations, hands-on training, a course review, and a written examination.

Topics Covered

  • Background information on asbestos
  • Potential health effects related to asbestos exposure
  • Function/qualifications and role of inspectors
  • Legal liabilities and defenses (general liability policies, claims-made, and occurrence policies, etc…)
  • Understanding building systems
  • Public/employee/building occupant relations
  • Pre-inspection planning and review of previous inspection records
  • Inspecting for friable and non-friable ACM and assessing the condition of friable ACM
  • Bulk sampling/documentation of asbestos
  • Inspector respiratory protection and personal protective equipment
  • Recordkeeping and writing the inspection report
  • Regulatory review
  • Field exercise (includes a walk-through inspection; on-site discussion)

This course meets the Mississippi Department of Education and Quality (MDEQ) and EPA model accreditation initial training requirements for asbestos abatement inspection and assessment.
